SUMMER CHALLENGE!

Maintaining a workout log is an outstanding way to track progress, and dial in your training. I challenge each of you to keep a workout log throughout the summer. By Monday (the first official summer workout), figure out what you are going to use for your log (small notebook, excel sheet, word document, wheel book, etc.), and write down at least 5 goals in the log. These goals can be as specific as “sub 3 min Fran”, or as general as “improve on oly lifting”. More specific goals will normally lead to better results. At a minimum, every day log in the workout of the day, and your time/score. I also recommend that you make remarks regarding your performance. For example “gassed in round 2”, “squat cleans were all arm pull”, or “butterfly pull ups”. If you really want to maximize the usefulness of the log, or just surprise yourself with what you actually eat, log down everything that you eat during the day, and how you feel afterwards. Trust me, if you do this honestly, you’ll be surprised! The more details, the better the log. At the end of each week, review your log, review your goals, and now you have a great list of technique to work on, and other items to help improve your overall fitness.

On a final note, a fellow CrossFitter gave me the following advice when I asked him about improving individual techniques (specifically we were discussing learning the butterfly kip). He told me that he identifies the techniques that he is weak in and/or wants to improve in, and adds them in to his warm up. Simple, yet extremely effective. Try it out.
