Today’s Alumni WOD is in honor of OC David Duffield. Duff is responsible for introducing me to CrossFit, and has been a vital part of the battalion and the CrossFit program from the day he checked in. I can say without hesitation that no one outside of my immediate family has had a more substantial impact on my personal and professional development than Duff. Duff is the kind of person that we all strive to be. He leads by example with both compassion and tenacity, and makes an immediate impact just by entering the room. He possesses the unique ability to seamlessly transition from quiet to in your face, and when he speaks, you listen. As most of you know, Duff is a SEAL. Although I cannot in any way, shape, or form pretend to understand the toughness, hardships, and achievements that he has experienced, after reading the SEAL creed (see below), I can say that he embodies every word! Duff, you’ll be missed here, but you belong at the tip of the spear, leading and inspiring your fellow SEALs. I’m proud to have served with you, and more proud to call you my friend! Welcome to the wardroom ENS Duffield (don’t get too crazy, you still have to get to the 19th!)

The SEAL Creed:

In times of war or uncertainty there is a special breed of warrior ready to answer our Nation’s call. A common man with uncommon desire to succeed. Forged by adversity, he stands alongside America’s finest special operations forces to serve his country, the American people, and protect their way of life. I am that man.

My Trident is a symbol of honor and heritage. Bestowed upon me by the heroes that have gone before, it embodies the trust of those I have sworn to protect. By wearing the Trident I accept the responsibility of my chosen profession and way of life. It is a privilege that I must earn every day.

My loyalty to Country and Team is beyond reproach. I humbly serve as a guardian to my fellow Americans always ready to defend those who are unable to defend themselves. I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my profession, placing the welfare and security of others before my own.

I serve with honor on and off the battlefield. The ability to control my emotions and my actions, regardless of circumstance, sets me apart from other men. Uncompromising integrity is my standard. My character and honor are steadfast. My word is my bond.

We expect to lead and be led. In the absence of orders I will take charge, lead my teammates and accomplish the mission. I lead by example in all situations.

I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight.

We demand discipline. We expect innovation. The lives of my teammates and the success of our mission depend on me – my technical skill, tactical proficiency, and attention to detail. My training is never complete.

We train for war and fight to win. I stand ready to bring the full spectrum of combat power to bear in order to achieve my mission and the goals established by my country. The execution of my duties will be swift and violent when required yet guided by the very principles that I serve to defend.

Brave men have fought and died building the proud tradition and feared reputation that I am bound to uphold. In the worst of conditions, the legacy of my teammates steadies my resolve and silently guides my every deed. I will not fail.

Well put Sir. I think most of us would agree.

  2. Maritza Says:

I’m jealous! Looks like a “BROMANCE” to me…when’s the wedding or was that picture from the wedding?…just kiddin’ Congrats Duff!

  3. LT Says:

Watch out Duff, she’ll pepper spray your ass without hesitation!!!!

  4. Duff Says:

This is said with some slight hesitation, but Maritza just dated herself. I am not sure they have used the term ‘BROMANCE’ since the early episodes of Charles in Charge. How old did you say you were? Please, please don’t pepper spray me, we are what you call “the good guys”. Thanks for everything and tomorrow will suck!

  5. LT Says:

Ouch, right to the age. I don’t even go there! Good luck, you’re on your own with that one.

Remember the old saying “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”? Add some pepper spray to the mix and that one gets worse quickly.

    Duff,

Thanks for everything you’ve done for the unit and for our club. Had it not been for you, we might not have ever heard of CrossFit to begin with. You are a true professional and it’s been great suffering thru WOD’s with you. Take care and come back to visit what you created anytime.

    YNC

Thanks for everything. This has truly been one of the best experiences of my career. I have learned so much from everyone here, from the top down and the bottom up. LT, thanks for the words and your dedication to all of us. Chief, you set the standard for future Chiefs I work with, they have some huge shoes to fill. I value the time here and will take the lessons that I have learned here from so many good people (Radz, Jessica (Amanda), Paul, Jorge, Scott, Kyz, Riebs, Sharp, PJ, and everyone else I forgot to mention. If any of you need anything in the future, look me up. I look forward to working with all of you in the future.
